Lake Nakuru Day Trip : Flamingos & Wildlife Safari

Experience a full day of adventure exploring Lake Nakuru National Park, one of Kenya’s most photogenic wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for its shimmering alkaline lake, Lake Nakuru is a birdwatcher’s paradise — home to hundreds of bird species, including the world-famous pink flamingos that color the shoreline in brilliant hues. But it’s not just about the birds; this compact park also boasts an impressive population of rhinos, lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, and zebras, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Along the way, you’ll stop to admire the beautiful lakes of Naivasha and Elementaita, and if you wish, enjoy an optional boat safari on Lake Naivasha, where hippos, fish eagles, and gentle giraffes often gather near the water’s edge.
Day 1: Nairobi – Lake Nakuru National Park – Lake Naivasha – Nairobi

Your adventure begins early as you are picked up from your Nairobi hotel or the airport at 6:00 a.m. and set off on a scenic 3-hour drive through the Great Rift Valley toward Lake Nakuru National Park.

Arrive in time for a morning game drive, exploring the park’s varied landscapes — from acacia forests and rocky cliffs to open grasslands. Keep your camera ready for close encounters with rhinos, lions, buffaloes, and the park’s famous flamingos that create a pink shimmer along the lake’s shores.

Around 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., you’ll break for lunch at a nearby lodge or restaurant overlooking the lake.

In the afternoon, continue your journey to Lake Naivasha, another jewel of the Rift Valley. Here, you can take an optional boat safari (at an extra cost) to glide among hippos, see cormorants drying their wings, and enjoy the serene beauty of this freshwater lake.

Afterwards, you’ll begin your return drive to Nairobi, arriving in the early evening for drop-off at your hotel or the airport — wrapping up a perfect day in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley.
