1-Day Tsavo East National Park Safari from Mombasa

Set out on an unforgettable day trip from Mombasa to Tsavo East National Park, Kenya’s oldest and one of its largest wildlife reserves. Known for its “red elephants” that bathe in the park’s rusty-red soil, Tsavo East offers a truly wild and rugged safari experience. This one-day adventure takes you deep into the heart of the savannah, where you’ll encounter lions, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, cheetahs, antelopes, and countless bird species thriving in their natural habitat. The highlight of your safari will be a visit to the Aruba Dam, a popular watering hole that attracts large numbers of animals — especially during the dry season. You’ll also enjoy a delicious lunch at Voi Safari Lodge, overlooking the sweeping plains below, before embarking on an afternoon game drive in search of more wildlife. By evening, you’ll return to Mombasa, carrying memories of Tsavo’s vast landscapes, thundering herds, and untamed beauty.
Day 1: Mombasa – Tsavo East National Park – Mombasa

our safari begins early with a morning pickup from your hotel or the airport in Mombasa. You’ll drive along the scenic Mombasa–Nairobi Highway, arriving at Tsavo East National Park through the Bachuma Gate after about three hours on the road.

Once inside, begin your morning game drive, exploring Tsavo’s iconic red-dust plains in search of elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, cheetahs, and antelopes. The park’s vastness offers a sense of true wilderness rarely found elsewhere.

Stop at the Aruba Dam, a man-made oasis that attracts herds of elephants and numerous bird species — especially striking during the dry season when wildlife congregates around the water.

Around midday, enjoy lunch at Voi Safari Lodge (or a similar lodge), whose restaurant and viewing deck overlook the expansive savannah — an ideal spot to watch wildlife roam freely below.

After lunch, set out on an afternoon game drive as you search for more animals and soak in Tsavo’s rugged beauty before beginning your return journey to Mombasa, arriving in the early evening.
