Day Tour to Ol Pejeta & Sweetwaters Sanctuary

Experience the wonders of Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a privately-owned wildlife sanctuary just a short drive from Nairobi. It’s home to lions, buffalo, elephants, leopards, and rhinos. Ol Pejeta stands out as Kenya’s ultimate predator haven with the highest density of these magnificent creatures. This tour guarantees encounters with lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and the elusive African wild dog. Plus, you’ll practically be guaranteed sightings of rhinos and chimpanzees in renowned animal sanctuaries within the vast 365 square-kilometer (141 square-mile) reserve. Your journey begins early in the morning with a pick-up from your chosen location, be it your hotel or another preferred spot. Along the way to Ol Pejeta, you’ll be introduced to traditional Kenyan coffee and tea plantations, with a chance to enjoy views of Mt. Kenya and its snow-capped peak, weather permitting. The drive to Ol Pejeta takes about 3 to 4 hours, making it the nearest destination to Nairobi where you can witness all of Africa’s Big Five. The reserve boasts six lion prides, nearly 80 lions in total, and around 30 cheetahs. During your journey through the park, you’ll have the opportunity to spot a wide range of East African wildlife, including giraffes, vervet monkeys, baboons, hippos, impalas, gazelles, dik-diks, and zebras. Ol Pejeta is renowned for its efforts to save endangered wildlife. The rhino sanctuary, the largest protected population in East Africa, is home to 100 black rhinos. Additionally, the last two northern white rhinos left on Earth reside here. Visits to this special enclosure are available twice a day, at 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., although visits to the Northern White Rhinos are not possible on day trips. Within Ol Pejeta, you’ll find a unique opportunity to interact with these intelligent and affectionate creatures. The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates orphaned and abandoned chimpanzees, providing them with spacious, natural enclosures where they can live freely. The sanctuary also hosts a variety of less-seen, unique wildlife, such as the tree hyrax, white-tailed mongoose, black-fronted duiker, mole rat, bushbuck, waterbuck, and eland, all set against the backdrop of majestic Mount Kenya.
Morning

You will be picked up from your Nairobi hotel or residence at 5:00 a.m. and begin your scenic drive north toward Nanyuki, at the foot of Mount Kenya. Enjoy views of the lush central highlands and rolling farmlands along the way.
Arrive at Ol Pejeta Conservancy mid-morning and begin your game drive across the open plains in search of elephants, lions, rhinos, buffalo, and giraffes. The conservancy is also home to endangered species such as the black rhino and Grevy’s zebra.

Midday

Visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a haven established for rescued chimpanzees in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute. Learn about their rehabilitation and conservation efforts while observing the chimps in their naturalized habitat.
Afterward, enjoy lunch at Sweetwaters Serena Camp overlooking the waterhole, where you can watch wildlife come to drink.

Afternoon

Continue with an afternoon game drive across the conservancy, with a chance to spot predators and other wildlife before starting your journey back to Nairobi. You will arrive in the early evening and be dropped off at your hotel or residence.
